Horizontal Directional drilling (also known as HDD) is the practice of drilling beneath the earth to install underground utilities and pipelines in a non-invasive way. The first horizontal directional system was created in the 1970’s. It was not till the 1980’s that the first true HDD rig of the modern era was produced by a company called FlowMole. This rig was not made available to purchase by contractors, they instead sold their HDD services for installing utilities. What is Directional Drilling?

A location to set up the HDD rig is next; taking into factors such as the amount the drill rods can bend and where the pipe needs to go. Drilling fluids specific to the ground conditions will then be mixed using a mud mixing system, and hooked up to the rig. A pilot bore comes next, using a locating system to track the transmitter housing and drill bit underground. The locating system tells you your depth, direction they are drilling, and whether the drill head is boring up or down underground. When drilled to the location the product needs to go to it is then pulled back through the hole with a swivel either attached to the drill bit or a reamer back to the rig. Reamers are used to increase the size of the hole.
